Fraternity Reconstruction

Fraternities underwent more review in 1992 as a Task Force was created to discuss the future relationship between fraternities and the University of Minnesota. Decisions were made to change

  • The way academic progress information is reported to the Greek system
  • The way chapters are informed about and assisted with the building inspection process
  • The relationship between the Special Counseling Office (now called Student Judicial Affairs) and IFC/PH J-Boards
  • The role of the Greek System in All-University orientation
  • The way the Greek system is included in University housing information1

A subcommittee on organizational development was also set up to make recommendations on Greek life. It made recommendations on rushing, membership education, organizational needs, and public relations.

Study on the Greeks

In September of 1997, a study of the Greek experience was conducted at the U. The study surveyed fraternity and sorority members on alcohol, personal growth and development, the chapter house, chapter advising, and general involvement in the campus community.
