HIST 1913: Goin’ to the U: A Critical History

Throughout the Fall 2017 term, students in Professor J.B. Shank's freshman seminar, HIST 1913 - Goin' to the U: A Critical History, have been researching the history of the University of Minnesota. What began as an overview of the history of higher education in the United States transitioned to viewing the University of Minnesota as a case study for the numerous changes in the nature of college education.

In this project, each student was tasked with considering an aspect of the University in which they were interested. Once they found their individual topics, by primarily utilizing archival resources found in the University Archives collection, students pursued individual research to formulate their own understanding of the history of their topics. Ranging from the founding moments near 1870 to the modern day university, these nine episodes help to illustrate how the university has evolved since its inception.
